Hout Bay Harbour Market is a must-do activity in Cape Town. I visited with my wife and two young teenage children and we loved it! There is something there for everyone. It’s open Fridays and weekends and has music, craft beers, amazing art and craft and a creative and fun vibe.
Getting to the Bay Harbour Market
Bay Harbour Market is in a converted harbour warehouse and spills out into the street. Being there feels like you’re in the heart of the operating harbour but when you walk inside it’s like a fantasy world stuck in a time-warp. To get there drive to the end of Harbour Road in Hout Bay. It’s about 600m beyond Marina’s Warf. From Hout Bay Backpackers it is about an 800meter walk through the harbour to the Hout Bay Harbour Market.
Art, Craft and Fashion at the Bay Harbour Market
As you walk towards the Bay Harbour Market the street is lined with arts and crafts. You are not hassled at all and the vibe is very relaxed. My daughter was mesmerised by the creative wares and came back inspired to do her own craft with sea shells and woven fabrics. My wife was taken by the fashion, jewellery and décor on display – uniquely created with something in between bohemian and creative chic.
Outdoor, Clothing and Wellness at the Bay Harbour Market
The array of clothing on display was impressive and a lot caught my eye including a very handy lightweight hammock. My son was also taken by some of the trendy and unique clothing.
Food, Drink and Music at the Bay Harbour Market
We enjoyed a delicious meal in the fun vibe but when it’s busy you can struggle to find a table, so get there early. The choice of food was impressive – everything from gourmet chiabattas to sushi to spicey curries and salads. The craft beer was also great – lots of choice and a great atmosphere. We loved listening to the live bands which created the mood – something that we don’t get much of where we live.
Where to stay in Hout Bay
We stayed at Dune Lodge/Hout Bay Backpackers, and although I’m biased, I’d definitely recommend it as a great option. It’s literally around the corner from the Bay Harbour Market and has rooms with amazing views over the beach and ocean to Chapman’s peak. The family and private rooms on the upper floors are Dune Lodge and the bottom rooms are Hout Bay Backpackers. It has a great location and you can walk across the road and onto the beach or to Marina’s Warf. It has secure parking and friendly organised staff. There are plenty of other accommodation options in Hout Bay so take your pick of place to stay.
